Commerce

Shopify or WooCommerce: choosing for your business.

Compare operational ownership, recurring costs, editing, payment requirements and migration before selecting a commerce platform.

Choose an operating model before a theme

Shopify and WooCommerce can both support an online store. The important difference is who operates the underlying system. Shopify provides a hosted platform. WooCommerce runs on WordPress and requires a hosting and maintenance arrangement. That choice affects the people, processes and recurring costs behind the storefront.

Start with your catalogue, fulfillment process and internal skills. A store with a modest catalogue and a small operations team has different needs from a business with complex stock rules, custom pricing and an existing ERP.

Calculate the whole cost of ownership

Compare agency design and development fees separately from platform subscriptions, hosting, paid apps or plugins, payment processing and maintenance. A cheap initial build can become expensive if every operational requirement needs another recurring tool.

For a Pakistan-based merchant, check the actual availability of the payment provider you intend to use. Currency, settlement, account eligibility and cash-on-delivery operations need verification with the provider. Do not assume a gateway works because its logo appears in a theme.

  • Platform or hosting bill
  • Required extensions and their renewal costs
  • Backup, security and update responsibilities
  • Gateway eligibility and operational reconciliation

Match editing freedom to maintenance capacity

Shopify themes provide a merchant-focused editing experience within platform boundaries. WooCommerce can offer substantial flexibility, but the plugin stack and customizations need testing when the system changes. More flexibility is useful only when somebody can maintain it.

Try the tasks your team will do each week: create a product, update a collection, change a banner, process an order and issue a refund. Evaluate the actual workflow rather than choosing only from screenshots.

Plan migration and measurement together

If you already sell online, migration should name products, customer records, historical data, old URLs and redirects. Each platform or extension has limits; confirm the migration path before agreeing a launch date.

A sensible brief also describes measurement and consent. The goal is understanding the store journey without claiming guaranteed sales. Use a staged launch checklist, test realistic orders and keep a route back to your existing operational records.
